A Gentle Return: Finding Your Way Back to the Mat with Kindness
Sometimes, the flow of life carries us away from our routines. Long days stretch into unstructured evenings, travel shifts our rhythm, and joyful spontaneity nudges our mat practice gently to the side. If your yoga has felt distant lately, you're not alone.
We see this often at Plymouth Yoga Room. There are seasons when the studio quiets, only to gradually awaken again with familiar faces seeking the peace and presence that practice brings. If you're feeling both drawn to return and unsure of where to begin, take heart: your mat is still here, and so are we.
This isn’t about picking up where you left off. It’s about meeting yourself where you are—softly, patiently, and without judgment.
Honor Where You Are, Right Now
Your body may feel different. Your energy may have shifted. Your breath may seem unfamiliar. That’s okay. The first step is simply arriving, with curiosity rather than expectation.
Instead of striving to match what your practice once was, try beginning with stillness. Lie down. Close your eyes. Notice what is present within your body and breath today. This gentle awareness lays the foundation for a more compassionate, sustainable return.
"Yoga isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing what serves you in this moment," reminds Sheri, our founder. "Come as you are. That’s enough."
Start Small, and Let it Grow
We often return to our mats with big plans—daily practice, long sessions, fast results. But more often than not, it’s the small, steady steps that create lasting change.
Try this:
Begin with just 10 minutes a day—a few sun salutations, gentle stretches, or simply breathwork.
Join us for two studio classes a week to rebuild your rhythm.
Choose nurturing practices that support a mindful return to your mat. Classes like Yin Flow, Yin & Meditation, or Foundation Flow offer the space to reconnect with breath, restore balance, and ease back into movement with intention. When you're ready, these classes create a beautiful foundation for exploring more dynamic offerings.
"Think of your practice like tending a garden after time away," says Brent, one of our lead teachers. "You don’t rush in and replant everything. You water, clear space, and care gently. That’s what brings it back to life."
Create Space for Consistency
The heart of yoga isn’t intensity—it’s regularity. Rather than waiting for the “perfect” time, find windows in your week where practice can quietly fit in:
A short flow before the house wakes up
An express class during your lunch break
A calming evening class to unwind and settle
Our schedule offers a range of class lengths and styles throughout the day to support your return. You can even link your practice with an existing habit—perhaps after brushing your teeth or before your evening cup of tea.
Gentle reminders like a calendar note, a sticky note on your mat, or an encouraging text from a friend can make a world of difference.
Use Props. Modify Freely. Practice Intelligently.
After time away, your body may need more support—and that’s not a step backward. It’s wisdom in action.
At Plymouth Yoga Room, you’ll find props available in every class: bolsters, blocks, blankets, and straps, ready to help you move with safety and ease.
Consider:
Placing blocks under your hands in forward folds
Dropping your knees in plank and chaturanga
Taking Child’s Pose often—and without waiting for exhaustion
Elevating hips on a blanket in seated poses for comfort and release
There’s strength in listening to your body’s needs.
Let Breath Lead the Way
If the physical practice feels daunting, begin with your breath. Breathwork is yoga—just as powerful and transformative as movement.
Try this gentle breathing practice:
Sit or lie down comfortably
Place one hand on your belly, one on your chest
Observe your breath without changing it
Begin to inhale for a slow count of 4
Exhale gently for a count of 6
Repeat for 10–15 breaths
This simple act helps calm the nervous system and creates a soft bridge back to your practice.
Celebrate Every Step Forward
Returning to your mat after time away is something to celebrate, not measure. Every time you show up, you’re reaffirming your commitment to yourself.
One of our longtime members keeps a gentle ritual: a journal where she simply marks the days she practices with a small heart. No judgment. No pressure. Just acknowledgment.
Whether you move for ten minutes or rest in stillness for five, it counts. You count.

You're Not Alone—We’re in This Together
One of the greatest gifts of practicing at Plymouth Yoga Room is community. We’re not just a place to move—we are a place to belong.
If you’re easing back into your practice, consider:
Reaching out to a teacher or staff member for support
Inviting a friend to attend a class with you
Connecting with others in class—you might find someone on the same path
As Sheri often says, “There’s never judgment here—only joy in seeing you return.”
Remember Why You Practice
When motivation wanes, reconnect with your "why."
Not the shape of the pose, but the shape of your life when you practice.
Ask yourself:
How do I feel when I leave class?
What qualities has yoga helped me cultivate?
In what ways does this practice support my relationships, focus, and wellbeing?
One of our teachers keeps a reminder on her mirror: “Clarity. Calm. Connection.” Just three words. Enough to bring her back every time.
